Giving up to give back during COVID 19: Genes Lecoanet Hemant

Reading Time: 2 minutes

When India went into a lockdown five months ago, a lot of us were forced to live within the safety of our homes, an “unwanted holiday” as some people have called it. However, there were also a lot of people, apart from the essential workers, who had no choice but to show up to work every day with minimum protection— daily wagers who could not afford necessary protection against COVID-19.

At a time when the local community really needed it, we saw the expat community step up, individuals, organizations, and brands alike, and pay it forward. One of such is the French clothing line Genes Lecoanet Hemant led by Hemant Sagar and Didier Lecoanet. Long before we were made aware, the team behind Genes LH had been making masks and distributing them for free to people who could not afford one. By the time they got in touch with us, they had already distributed numerous masks, but they also wanted to be able to reach out to more people.

I once heard someone say, “giving back involves a certain amount of giving up.” In unprecedented times, the idea of giving back, as inspiring as it sounds, also seem challenging. Nevertheless, if there is any time to give up and give back, it is now; and this is exactly what we found them doing. The team of Genes LH were paying for the masks from their own pockets! The masks that they designed and distributed were well-made, functional, and beautiful! Not long after receiving the masks from Genes LH, our team sent it to Tatsiana Chykhayeva of Life Talk Delhi, who alongside other expats, were distributing food and essentials in the slums of Okhla.

Though the lockdown has been lifted, the pandemic is not over. As a community, there is still so much we can do. If you want more information on how you can give back, or you have ideas on how to go about it, get in touch with us! We would love to hear from you!
